Political Perception
Propaganda is defined as "the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person" by the Merriam-Webster dictionary. What does this have to do with adverting? Well, it wishes to sell an idea to people usually involving religion and politics. Another commonality shared is the fact that propaganda is made to persuade people. This type of advertising usually appears during war-time or other crises and is mainly for political gain. Also, its medium is not exclusively used in posters. An example of this is the film ''Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror." The plot is as follows: In England, the second war has just began and Nazi messages are mysteriously being broadcast via the BBC radio. Holmes is commissioned by British Intelligence to solve the problem. It comes to light that the voice is none other than a "Lord Haw-Haw" and that the German forces have been defeated. The film ends with the patriotic quote
Holmes: Good old Watson. The one fixed point in a changing age. But there's an East wind coming all the same. Such a wind as never blew on England yet. It will be cold and bitter, Watson, and a good many of us may wither before its blast. But it's God's own wind none the less. And a greener, better, stronger land will be in the sunshine when the wind is cleared.:
