The 1980's are sometimes referred to as a greedy decade and that claim is not unfounded. America's economy experienced a dramatic rise that many of the country's young men and women took part in. They were known as yuppies, fresh faced professionals valuing all things upper-class over anything else. Their mindset made them ripe pickings for those in the ad game. One of the main goals of advertising is to discover what the consumer is thinking and appeal to that thought. Think about these ads and how they relate to the decade. In the first one, notice how the models are posed. Three out of four of them have their hands on their hips, expressing assertiveness. How about the males? One has the classic bad-boy ''jacket over shoulder" look while wearing sunglasses. All of their facial expressions are the same, displaying deadpan defiance. Overall, the feeling conveyed of this ad seems to be rebellion
and youth. Let's look at the next one, an ad for coca cola. The subject used in this photo is Bill Cosby, a familiar face for most in the 1980's. Unlike the previous example he is smiling and wearing a red and white sweater. These factors try to replicate the notion of tradition, which is especially important to the Coke company since its been around since 1886. The watch picture is supposed to portray elegance. Note that the tone of this photo is darker in color that the other. Also, see the accents of gold from the items above the timepiece. A yuppie is a likely consumer for this piece of luxury.
